The Hidden Perks of Library Cards

I’ve always thought that library cards are magical. They can grant you unlimited access to thousands of amazing books! (Insert angelic chorus and lots of sparkles here.)

Even if you’re not a huge fan of checking out books, you can still get tons of benefits from your library card. It might get you free access to eBooks, audiobooks, TV shows, movies, music, learning tools, career advice, and more!

Not all libraries offer the same benefits to their cardholders, and some have more freebies than others. If the goodies at your city library aren’t so great, take a look at the offerings of other libraries in your state. Some libraries offer free memberships to everyone in the state! If you’re still striking out, try large libraries like the Queens Public Library in New York and the Houston Public Library in Texas. Libraries like those allow non-state residents to access their online materials for about $50 a year!

Here’s a handy list of the opportunities your library card might offer.

1. Check out and read eBooks. Most libraries use one or more apps, such as Libby, Axis 360, or Hoopla Digital, that allow you to “check out” virtual copies of eBooks. Some services are even linked to Kindle, so you can access your “checked out” eBooks on a Kindle!

2. Get access to other reading material. By entering your library card information into apps such as Hoopla, PressReader, and Flipster, you may be able to access virtual copies of comic books, magazines, and newspapers!

3. Stream TV shows and movies. Some libraries offer access to Kanopy, a streaming service with everything from Oscar winning-movies to PBS programming and documentaries.

4. Listen to audiobooks and music. Some libraries offer audio content through their eBook app, while others use a separate app for audiobooks and music. Either way, it’s free to listen!

5. Learn a new language. From a free Rosetta Stone subscription to one-on-one tutoring, some libraries offer tools to help you speak a new language in no time!

6. Get tutored. Some libraries offer Brainfuse HelpNow, a service that tutors students on science, math, and other subjects from kindergarten through college. The live individual sessions are text-based and take place during set hours every day.

7. Get career advice. Using Brainfuse JobNow, a service available through some libraries, you can access live, chat-based career coaching for adults, download workplace templates, and upload your résumé to get expert feedback. Many libraries also offer free LinkedIn Learning video courses to help you develop your skills.

8. Access information and coaching. Your library may offer access to legal forms, tax advice, individual financial coaching, or information on investment research.

9. Discover your heritage. Some libraries offer free access to Ancestry, a service that helps you research your family tree and learn more about your heritage.
